Heavy Armored Combat

Welcome to War of the Wings XVIII in the 5th Century BCE, where the Greeks and Persians wage epic warfare to determine who will rule the lands. Combatants will choose to wage war as a Persian Immortal or Elite Spartan!

The Battles

Thursday 10/16/2025 – The Battle of Marathon – Relic Battle
The dust still clung to their sandals as we watched our last hope vanish over the ridge, their silhouettes shrinking against the blood-orange sky. Our swiftest runners carried proof of the Persians’ advance, seeking aid. We had held as long as we could, but the Persian numbers were endless, and now the flames of their torches lit the distant hills like a funeral pyre for Greece itself. Sparta must send reinforcements, or Athens will burn before the moon wanes.

Friday 10/17/2025 – The Battle of Plataea – Broken Field Battle
The sea was black as oil beneath our Persian ships. The only sound was the quiet lapping of waves against the hull as we rowed under a moonless sky, cloaked in silence and shadow. Our orders were to strike swiftly and unseen—no horns, no cries, no torches to give us away. The Greeks had signal fires ready on every cliff and hill, and archers manned the ramparts. One spark could rouse a dozen cities before we made landfall. Tonight, their village slept, unaware of the storm crawling up from the water—and if we reached the shore without a cry raised, by sunrise, no one would be left to warn the others.

Saturday 10/18/2025 – The Battle of Anopaea Pass – Mountain Pass Battle
The stench of sweat and iron hung thick in the mountain air as we stood shoulder to shoulder on the narrow goat path—backs to sheer rock, faces to the death that climbed toward us. The Persians came like a flood, but the pass was so tight they could face us only a few at a time, their numbers useless against our wall of shields and spears. The clang of weapons rang out with every clash, echoing off the cliffs like thunder from the gods. The sun blazed down, painting the rocks red with blood. Still, we held fast—because here, on this ragged trail meant for beasts, we made our stand. We fought not just for our homeland, but for every mother, every child, and every olive tree that waited below.

Saturday 10/18/2025 – The Battle of Thermopylae – Limited Front Battle
We poured across the plain like a tide of iron, shields gleaming beneath the sun, our banners snapping in the wind as trumpet calls echoed over the dust-choked field. Before us, the Greeks stood in tight formation—a wall of bronze and stubborn defiance—far too few for the storm they faced. Again and again we charged, certain they would break under our numbers, but they met us with a fury we had never thought possible. Their phalanx held—disciplined and unshaken—each man fighting as if the gods themselves watched from Olympus. Comrades fell, cut down by blades that refused to rest, and for the first time, the chill of doubt seeped through the heat of battle—for though we were many, they fought as if they had nothing left to lose. And that made them dangerous beyond measure.
