The Tears of the Gods – Sponsored by the Order of the Pearls – Friday, Oct 17, 10am – 3pm
Pearls have been used as adornment for centuries, at least as far back as ancient Greece, where they believed pearls were the tears of the gods. The oldest known pearl jewelry was discovered in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC.
Because natural pearls were so rare throughout history, only the richest nobles could afford them. During the Byzantine Empire, rules dictated that only the emperor was allowed to wear these treasured gemstones. Ancient Egyptians were often buried with their prized pearls.
The Order of the Pearl is a grant level Order of the Kingdom of Atlantia, and the value of research will be included in the Rubic for selecting the winner.
The entrants will produce a worthy “Tears of the Gods” in the fashion worn in Hellentic Greece. The judging criteria will be based on the best use of the Pearl. I have two links shown from the Metropolitan Museum of Art for you to review as you begin your journey and construction. Beadwork, Bead Embroidery, Goldwork as the Needle arts are preferred.
The prize for the winner is a Site specific certificate and a $50.00 gift certificate for supplies!

The Eudaimonia (A State of Flourishing and Well-being) Cooked Dish Competition – Sponsored by Viscountess Sylvie la Chardonniere OL, OP – Saturday, Oct 18, 3pm – 4pm
This competition is held as part of Atlantian Domestic Arts and Sciences.
In ancient Greece, food and dining held significant social, cultural, and even religious importance. It wasn’t just about sustenance; meals were a way to connect with others, express social status, and honor the gods. Let us honor that by cooking “Globi”, a dish made from a recipe found in the writings of that time.
Participants will bring their completed dish and any documentation to the Arts and Science location on Saturday at the listed time. All participants will then taste and discuss the dishes which were created, their redactions (documentation encouraged) and dish presentation. The participants and royalty will then vote for the winner. The public is encouraged to participate in the discussion but not invited to vote. The winner will be announced and prizes given at court.
Recipe: Globi Recipe by Marcus Porchius Cato, Cato the Elder (234 BC- 149 BC) from De Agri Cultura (On Agriculture) “Globos sic facito. Caseum eum alica ad eundem modum misceto. Inde quantos voles facere facito. In ahenum caldum unguen indito. Singulos aut binos coquito versatoque crebro duabus rudibus, coctos eximito, eos melle unguito, papaver infriato, ita ponito.”
Recipe for globi (translation): Mix the cheese and spelt in the same way, sufficient to make the number desired. Pour lard into a hot copper vessel, and fry one or two at a time, turning them frequently with two rods, and remove when done. Spread with honey, sprinkle with poppy-seed, and serve. – English translation by W. D. Hooper and H. B. Ash, 1934.
We can’t wait to see (and taste) what you’ll bring. Come connect, and celebrate with us!
Bardic Bearpit – Sponsored by – Ollamh Anubh de Mona, Royal Bard of Atlantia
Join us at War of the Wings for a Bardic Bearpit competition at 1 pm on Thursday! This is a chance for bards to showcase the things at which they excel. Come pit yourself against other bards and challenge your opponent to forms or themes of your own choosing. The bearpit will be moderated but the assembled participants and audience will vote to judge each round. Please note that all participants must be present at the beginning of the competition, no late entries are allowed – so please be on time! Competition sponsored by Ollamh Anubh de Mona, Royal Bard of Atlantia.
In the event of a final tie, the tied entrants compete against each other using a challenge provided by the moderator. More than two entrants may compete against each other in the same round for a tiebreaker.
All entrants must be present at the beginning of the competition, no new entries after it begins (so please be on time). This allows all entrants an equal chance to earn points.
Performances should not exceed 6 minutes in length.
No use of cell phones by performers. Paper books are permitted. We want to hear things that are already in your repertoire!
Play proceeds clockwise around the circle.
First entrant is determined using “spin the bottle” in the center of the circle. That person gets to pick the first challenge, or the moderator can provide a challenge.
Challenges should be broad and can be format or thematic, but not both. For example “sonnet,” “filk,” or “limerick” is acceptable but “love sonnets” is not. Likewise, themes should not be too specific, so “War” is an acceptable theme, but “the Battle of Hastings” is too narrow. The moderator(s) will make any necessary decisions about whether a topic is too narrow.
Each entrant challenges the next person clockwise in the circle, both entrants perform, and the assembled crowd of entrants and audience votes to determine the winner. The moderator tracks points, with one point given for each win.
If an opponent cannot provide a worthy response to a challenge, they may concede without performing, and the challenger wins that round.
In the event of a tie, the moderator flips a coin to determine the winner.
The winner of each round gets to choose the next challenge with a new opponent, proceeding clockwise around the circle.
If a single entrant wins three consecutive rounds in a row, their turn ends and a new pair of opponents squares off, with the closest in proximity to the exiting performer choosing the challenge and performing first.
Play continues until one performer earns five points or ninety minutes has passed from the time the competition starts, whichever comes first.
