The technology of the oil lamp has been in use since the Neolithic. Once the distillation of alcohol was discovered, likely prior to the 1300s, alcohol also was used to fuel similar lamps that became known as spirit lamps. By the 1500s, the use of such lamps had spread to alchemists in Europe, and they remain in use even today for small-scale heating of materials in the laboratory, in jewelry work, and in many other related arts. In this session I’ll talk briefly about the history of their use and will demonstrate how to make and use a spirit lamp for your medieval A&S projects. I’ll have limited supplies available; please bring a small wide glass jar with a tight fitting metal lid if you wish to make your own.
