Try your hand at German Brick Stitch, a counted satin stitch style from 13th-15th century Lower Saxony and Westphalia. Students will leave with an understanding of stitch mechanics, a brief history of the style, and the beginnings a bookmark or cup cover.
$5 kits will be available that include hoop, fabric, needle, and thread. Scissors will be provided.
Suggested materials to bring if you do not wish to purchase a kit:
For practice:
– Plastic canvas, size 5 to 7 squares per inch and
– Needle appropriate for using on plastic canvas
– Thread sized appropriately for the plastic canvas in 1-2 colors, depending on how much you would like to practice.
For cup cover/bookmark:
– A small to medium sized hoop
– A tapestry needle, sized appropriately for fabric count
– Ground cloth of your choice, cut to 8in x 8in square. Size 28ct or 32ct cotton recommended for beginners, linen for those comfortable with it. Aida isn’t recommended, but it can work in a pinch.
– DMC or other brand cotton 6-strand embroidery floss in 2-3 colors.”
